The U.C.C. Royal Brass Band a group of professionals was formed by Jamal P. Dickerson in the year of 1996 under the Unity Community Center's UCC Music Intelligence Program founded in 1984. The U.C.C. Royal Brass Band's purpose is to keep the legacy, music, and history of musicians such as those of the New Orleans and southern area of America ALIVE. The culture of this style of Band is very rich and greatly appreciated in the United States and many parts of the world. Jamal Dickerson and his friend Hassan Sabree and Jamal's younger brother Nasir have brought many musicians together from the Camden, New Jersey and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area to join the Brass Band. Most members of the band are professionals with Music Educational Degrees; however the band also consists of Educators, College, High, Middle and Elementary school students. UCC Royal Brass Band have performed at many prestigious events such as political inaugurations, mardi-gras events, weddings, wedding receptions, reunions graduations, pep rallies, sporting events, cabarets, parties, community events, wakes and funerals. They have brought many audiences to their feet in celebration, love and appreciation of the New Orleans traditional, Pep Band style and R&B style music. They receive many accolades and standing ovations for their performances. U.C.C. Royal Brass Band has been in many news articles, and received many awards, proclamations, citations, resolutions, commendations from political, community, business and religious leaders for their work in the community and for showing support to the KATRINA tragedy. Prior to the KATRINA tragedy, the U.C.C. Royal Brass Band performed with the famous Dirty Dozen Brass Band of New Orleans (http://www.dirtydozenbrass.com/). Following the KATRINA tragedy, the U.C.C. Royal Brass Band performed with the renowned REBIRTH Brass Band of New Orleans as well (http://www.rebirthbrassband.com/). We honor, respect and love our friends and mentors from the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and the Rebirth Brass Band. We will always cherish their fellowship and continue to help keep this wonderful music in the hearts and minds of many. Jamal P. Dickerson, B.S. / MPA , whom many call the GENIUS, has been playing the trumpet since the second grade of elementary school. Using his high level of education and musicality, Jamal arranged, composed and produced the first CD and second CD for the U.C.C. Royal Brass Band. He also is credited for arranging and producing two African drum and song CD's. These four master pieces of incredible work has placed him among many greats. Jamal is the musical director of the Unity Community Center's U.C.C. Music & Jazz Ensemble, and U.C.C. Royal Brass Band. Jamal is a 7th Degree Master Black Belt in the Martial Arts (Karate), the Supreme Captain of the Universal Pasha Karate School and the Drill Instructor of our World Champion UPK Pasha Generals. Jamal is also a member and performer for the Philadelphia Legends of Jazz Orchestra, lead and directed by Mr. Leon Mitchell (http://www.phillylegendsofjazz.com/). His mentors and teachers are the legends Mr. Leon Mitchell, the director of the Philadelphia Legends of Jazz Orchestra, Cullen Knight and Terell Stafford two famous trumpeters, Ryan Bates, Charles Elliot, Dr. Diane Lyle Smith, Melvin Miles, Charles Bowen Sr., the legendary drummer George "Butch" Ballard, legendary pianist Alfred "Alfie" Pollitt, legendary tenor saxophonist Robert Bootsie Barnes, legendary saxophonist Tony Williams, Lovett Hines, a music teacher/ educational director at the Philadelphia Clef Club and many more professional musicians. Jamal Dickerson and his friend Hassan Sabree graduated from Morgan State University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Education and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Rutgers University 2010. They were leaders of the World Famous Morgan State University's Magnificent Marching Machine (Band), Jazz Band, Pep Band and Orchestra. Jamal's younger brother Nasir graduated from University of the Arts, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor Degree in Music Performance in May of 2006. After graduating, Jamal, Hassan Sabree and Nasir came back to teach in the inner cities of Camden, New Jersey. Jamal is currently an Instrumental Music Teacher and Director of Bands for Camden Creative & Performing Arts Public Schools. Hassan Sabree is currently an Instrumental Music Teacher and Director for three Public Schools (Cream Family, Parkside Elementary and Forrest Hill Elementary School) in Camden, New Jersey. Nasir Dickerson in May of 2007, earned and received his Master's Degree in MUSIC EDUCATION at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with high academic honors. He is currently teaching at Morgan Village Middle School Camden, New Jersey. Jamal accredits his best friends Hassan Sabree, Haki Pratt and his younger brother Nasir Dickerson, as his best helpers, performers and professional supporters in the U.C.C. Royal Brass Band. He is married to his lovely wife Ronsha with their six wonderful children, Jamal II, Karima, Sekou-Moussa, Tenenfig, Fatima and Akeelah, whom are also very supportive of all his endeavors.
